And here my problems begin. I still like Kira but... Did you see Mello? How can you not be obsessed with him? I'm obsessed with him and his chocolate! And I think that if Mello was the one against Kira from the beginning, I would be supporting him. But now? Can I get both? And, yeah, sure Near. I don't know; he always reminded me of a little monkey. Cute and everything but other than that? Nope.

The story is a little all over the place at the moment, but I think it'll be really awesome as the different threads start to come back together or snipped off (the Greek Fates style).

3.5 stars -Light was a stone cold bastard. He didn't have any loving or kind feelings whatsoever, at least early in the series he seemed to care for his family and genuinely wanted to make the world a better place. He was no longer like that, he was willing to kill Sayu, his dad, and anyone else if they got in the way of his goal to create a new world he could control. Also, the fact he was living with Misa for years but still hadn't developed any feelings for her showed how inhuman he was, he was totally fine with using her and then killing her if it suited his purpose. He had no redeeming qualities whatsoever or any human-ness about him, it made him come across as a caricature, at least he had some depth before. I really hope he gets killed soon. -The new dynamics with Light having to stay one step ahead of N and Mello was kind of interesting. But I wasn't all that impressed with how much Mello/Near reminded me of L. Even though they were just as, if not more, intelligent and logical than L, they still seemed like poor versions of him. Maybe, they'll develop and stand out on their own in later volumes. -Notes: Light's sister (Sayu) was kidnapped by a group who wanted the Death Note. Light had two new opponents, both of them were trained to be L's successors: Near/N was promoted as the new L and was working with the FBI. And Mello joined the Mafia when Near/N became the new L.

I read the last few chapters as a reminder because I already have the 9th volume. The only thing that stands out is that Light Yagami has become a pansy. That's right, I said it! Ever since what happened with L in the last volume, and the years that have passed, Light has gotten soft and I don't like it one bit. In this volume, Light now has concerns for the well-being of his family and actually doesn't want to put them at risk. Really?! There's so much that he says, it gets me off track. I'm only continuing to read this because 1) my sister says that the anime ending was...thought provoking. and 2) i really wanna know what happens to somehow who uses the Death Note. they can neither go to heaven or hell. Hmm.

Mello! Look at him in his chocolate glory! Another character that you really just want to hug but know that he'd shoot your head off if you even got within a foot of his chocolate bar. The characters in these books are amazingly corny, all with their own odd habits. Whether that be eating chocolate or killing people, its all fun, yup fun...

Light is cold, man, cold. Especially to the ladies. There's poor misguided Misa (Hell no did Light just speak to her like that!) – she really needs to get out of there. And then lil sis Sayu, whose brother is mercilessly contemplating killing her off, just so he can have an easier time as a brutal mass murderer. Bad times. All in all, the series is still good... but that level of excitement and mystery is somewhat lacking now. I like the addition of Mello and Near, but it feels like i Light is cold, man, cold. I like the addition of Mello and Near, but it feels like it's lost the focus and sense of direction it had – and I think the time jump has eliminated a lot of the tension. Kira doesn't have much of a presence here, it's just L vs M vs N – and that just ain't as interesting to me right now. Maybe this volume is more of a reset button, and the next volumes will pick up once all this introducing-of-the-new-story-arc is out of the way. I did like Sidoh though, with his insectiness and his lack of mental acuity. Poor guy. All he wants is his magical murder weapon back, is that so much to ask?

How Light treats Misa makes me angry every time but now it's reached the level where I overread those passages because it gets tiring to see Misas non-reaction to it.

The story is quickly finding its footing after the huge plot twist in the previous volume. With Near and Mello now in the game, Light finds himself stuck between a rock and a hard place. He sometimes loses sight of his goals and gets lost in a lust for revenge after having his ego attacked. Misa remains such a painful sight. How can you be THAT blinded by love? I'm enjoying this series, although at times the events can get a little hokey. You can tell, at times, that the creators may not know the larger context of certain aspects of their narrative world, such as behavior and customs in the U.S. Still, intriguing, and I want to go through to complete the entire series.

After 8 volumes of Death Note, I find that that character I pity the most is Yagami-san, Light's dad. He seriously endured a lot. His family was suspected, his daughter kidnapped, he and his son confined. He was shot by the Yotsuba Kira. And add that he's the Director of the Japanese Police Force and had to give up the death note to the kidnappers. The poor guy was even scared he'll have to divorce his wife. When I think of all that, I despise Light so very much. Because of his own son, Yagami-san aged like 20 years since Kira came to the world. (I don't resent Light, however, for what he's doing to Misa :p The stupid woman deserves multiples of that!) One last thing, I ship Matsuda with Sayu <3 He cares about her more that Light does (he even considered killing her, that *******.)

And, at last, Death Note is good again. It'll sound weird to a lot of fans that I'm saying that. A lot of fans hate this arc - from this volume until volume 12, things went downhill for a lot of people. And I just don't get that, to be honest. Yes, I miss L, just like everybody else. But the fact that one character died doesn't suddenly make the series bad. And moreover, the memoryless Light arc was so terrible that this is a welcome break. That arc was filled with plotholes, it was thematically boring, and it was predictable. This was a return to form for Death Note - finally, things are interesting and suspenseful again. Things are so good, the misogyny can barely even harsh my mellow. Yes, it pisses me off that Misa is happy under Light's blatant abuse, happy to be his subordinate, happy to be manipulated. But I'm just so happy that Ohba got the series back on track that I barely even care. Light's sister being kidnapped was one of the most suspenseful arcs here, because it was genuinely difficult to tell what Light would do, something we haven't seen in ages. And it's cool to see that he isn't actually a psychopath. (view spoiler)[Light would've killed anyone else to get the notebook back, but he spared his sister. He doesn't feel comfortable going quite that far. His mind can be changed, and he does have sympathy. (hide spoiler)] It's pretty subtle, but it's one of the most significant parts of the series, if you ask me. Things are more complicated here than at any other point in the series. Before, it had been Kira vs. L, then L vs. Yotsuba. Now, it's Kira vs. the Japanese Police Force vs. the SPK vs. the Mafia. Not to mention Shinigami interference. Each group is fairly self-interested, and each group has different goals. A lot of fans claim that things get confusing in this arc, and I do see where they're coming from. But if you can keep up with it - and it's not that hard, if you're willing to give it all your mental attention - it's very engaging. The gambits pile on top of each other, and Ohba brings it together beautifully. Overall, other than the misogyny, I'm finding very little to complain about. There are only four volumes left, and I really don't want this series to end.

Death Note, #8 is written by Tsugumi Ohba and drawn by Takeshi Obata and is 200 pages long. The genre of the story is mystery and also realistic modern time science fiction. The book is based on a notebook, called the Death Note, that allows a person to "kill" another person just by writing the full name of the person and thinking of an image of them. This notebook solely belongs to the Death Gods, or "Shinigamis", but one day, a death god named Ryuk is bored and throws the book to the human world. Light Yagami, a straight-A regular high-school student, picks up the book and find out what the book does. Because he romanticizes a perfect world, he believes that using this notebook to kill criminals will be able to purify the world. L, a mysterious genius who work and specialize in solving worldwide crimes, fights against Yagami, or "Kira", but after several conflicts, L eventually loses and gets killed by Light, leaving Light unstoppable. In this volume, the two successors of L is introduced: Near and Mello. Near was working with the United Staes government, in the attempt to catch Kira, but, on the other hand, Mello is trying to gain the notebook that Light possessed. Little does he know that Light actually gains another Notebook. Light actually gains the guts to join the anti-Kira Japanese police division where his father is. His idea was to eliminate any suspicion by joining the anti-Kira. Mello gets hold of Light's sister and the direct (or Light's father) decides to trade the notebook that the police gains from the investigation and succeeds in getting in touch with Mello. Because I enjoyed the previous chapter quite deeply, I was really excited when I started this book. However, I am really disappointed with the new plot. Though I am content that there is a sequel, I just think that the new one does not match with the preceding one and fails to explore more deeply. However, I do want to see how the book concludes and rather Light finishes his quest to a perfect world or fails and meets his demise by the new L's.

This book just isn't as interesting as the others. For one thing every single character (including the new shinigami) uses Light's circular reasoning, which is really confusing and delays progress. As for the new mini-L's I was shocked to find the Mello is actually a boy? There's just something about him that screams "girl", perhaps it's the extremely tight and shiny outfits, or the chic haircut. Hmmmmmm, as for the other mini-L he is soooo cute! He's like a replica of L, I have to wonder if he isn't like a clone of L at a younger age, but he doesn't really seem to do much. I could rant about Misa for pages. She's stupid and doesn't realize Light doesn't love her, he might not even like her, he's just using her. She has lost the small bits of spunk she used to have and now I'm counting the minutes until she finally kicks the bucket, her life-span has after-all been shortened twice now. Finally there's been too much focus on the main characters. I miss the little side pieces with Matsuda, and Yagami-San and Aizawa, and other characters that popped up.
