It deserves no higher than a 3, though I have long since been a fan of Roeder's books, I can't base my rating on that alone. Casper has always been my favorite character from The Gay Youth Chronicles, so I was very excited when I learned he was getting his own book. Now that I've read it? I'm nothing but disappointed. This is the story of Casper going to college. Roeder could have done so much with this but for some reason he chose not to. We got more descriptions of the various food places around IU's Bloomington campus and what Casper or Brendan were eating at any given meal than of Casper dealing with college. Casper settles into the college amazingly well, his only struggle is that he's lonely until he and Brendan adopt a couple of cats. There truly couldn't have been some sort of struggle? Casper couldn't have had one class that he absolutely hated? He couldn't have had trouble on some assignment? Something that challenged things he believed? Some experience that made him grow more into the adult character that he will be in the future? Without any conflict this just felt like filler and fluff.

Nothing too eventful happens but its fun to spend some more tile with the boys of Verona though now it's mostly Bloomington. The easy comfortable feeling of spending time with friends is excellent in this one as it ends at Christmas with the new (straight) Aiden added to the cast. The Bloomington area and the Indiana University Campus play a role here almost as important as some of the characters and the only worry I have is that I'll get fat reading about all the foods that they eat.
